Meet Casey Schreiner
I am a professional writer and producer with 19 years of experience in scripted and live television, web, print, and live events. I have worked both solo and managing teams of writers and producers -- on projects that have months of lead time and on live shows with turnarounds of only a few hours.
I have developed projects from scratch, taken over projects developed by others, and written for comedy, non-fiction, historical / documentary, outdoor advocacy, and public-facing corporate presentations. I've written for award-winning actors and people who have never been on a stage or in front of a camera before. I've written pieces for far-reaching magazines and even the Los Angeles Times. I've written three books for two different publishers. And I've created and managed one of the web's leading outdoor brands since 2006.
I split time between Los Angeles and Portland, OR. I love dogs and donuts.

LOS ANGELES TIMES
Contributing Writer / Newsletter Writer
I am a regular contributor to the outdoor and travel sections of the Los Angeles Times. From October through December of 2022, I took over writing the newspaper's weekly outdoor newsletter THE WILD, which reaches over 60,000 subscribers. I researched stories, conducted interviews, cleared images, and wrote original commentary every week. I also devised a new, more streamlined organization system for the newspaper.
I help manage a small team of writer-producers for Nickelodeon's "Unfiltered," a kids game show produced and shot entirely remotely. I pitched and developed games and clues for a variety of celebrities, from Tyra Banks and Shaun White to H.E.R. The show is hosted by comedian Jay Pharaoh and is one of the top-rated shows on all networks for its age bracket.
I have been a frequent writer for Mighty Media Studios, the in-house production company for Microsoft. In addition to live, consumer-facing shows like video game launch events, I have also written scripts for live events for internal and professional audiences like the internal Icon Awards for Microsoft's communications team and the global, client-facing Ignite and Inspire multi-day live conference shows.
"Power On: the Story of Xbox" Series
I wrote voiceover scripts for the six part documentary series produced by Mighty Media for Microsoft. I worked extensively with the series Executive Producer / Director to creatively brainstorm storylines, identify areas where additional interviews or footage could be used, and ensure the series had consistent voice and narrative drive.
This series won a Webby Award and was nominated for two Daytime Emmys.
I wrote the book "Cloud Spotting," the first in an upcoming series on using observations in the natural world to inspire a mindfulness practice for Chronicle Books. I had a short time to research, write, and edit this hardcover book, and gave notes on the art direction. The book is available nationwide.
Head Writer / Series Producer
"Live from the 8th Dimension"
I developed the concept behind "Live from the 8th Dimension," a partially scripted, partially improvised hour long animated show shot and produced live in interactive virtual reality. I managed a team of writers, developed and planned storylines, and was on-set during the live production.
"Talk Show the Game Show"
Comedian Guy Branum (Chelsea Lately, The Mindy Project) and I performed and developed the live show for several years before Push-It Productions (Wanda Sykes, Page Hurwitz) produced two seasons for TruTV. I was Lead Judge (on-camera) for both seasons and Head Writer for the second season.
UBISOFT / TOUCH WORLDWIDE
"UbiE3 Press Event"
I am the sole writer for this keystone corporate event, working closely with producers from the agency Touch Worldwide to produce a live 90 minute stage and broadcast production for Ubisoft, one of the world's largest and most respected video game publishers. I work with celebrities, individual game teams, and C-level executives from Ubisoft to create a unified and innovative message for the live show. The show is seen by more than 4 million people annually.
In 2019, this event won an ExAwards Gold Award for Best Press Event for the 2018 conference.
Head Writer / Producer
"Attack of the Show"
I worked on nearly every aspect of G4's flagship daily, live variety program, rising from an Associate Producer to Head Writer. I was in charge of managing a team of four writers to create a 12-minute opening comedy segment and sketches, often day-of with only a few hours to prepare. I worked closely with the Executive Producers and Segment Producers to ensure consistent tone and voice on this groundbreaking show about internet / nerd culture.
Attack of the Show won many awards, including Tellys, Webbys, and a Cable Ace Award, as well as two Guinness World Records.
Series Producer / Head Writer
I helped develop Participant Media's first live, daily news and entertainment show for their television network pivot from concept to pilot. I helped audition and chose hosts, and staffed the show's team of writers and producers. I also ran daily show meetings, supervised the research-heavy script, and wrote daily segments for the show.
Founder and Editor-in-Chief
I started this site on blogspot in 2006 and have since grown it into one of the most read hiking blogs on the West Coast (1.7M pageviews in 2019). I manage six writers in different cities throughout the West, drive editorial of the site and brand, run the social media accounts for the site, write an email newsletter with over 7000 subscribers, and handle the operations of Modern Hiker, LLC.
Modern Hiker has been featured on local, regional, and national media over the years, including CNN, Good Morning America, New York Magazine, Outside Magazine, NPR's Marketplace, and many others.
I am the author of "Day Hiking Los Angeles" (2016) and "Discovering Griffith Park" (2020). "Day Hiking Los Angeles" is the most up to date hiking guide for the Los Angeles region, featuring detailed guides for 125 trails. It is now in its third printing. "Discovering Griffith Park" is the first in-depth guidebook ever written about Griffith Park, one of the largest municipal parks in North America. It launched in May, 2020, selling out immediately and landing on the "Los Angeles Times" best-seller list.
